After a short technical hiatus, PlayPause is back with a new URL (now .fr), a slightly revamped design and (almost) clean archives. Links in previous posts have been removed, but are still available on request.

I’m glad to introduce the new installment in the RadioLala series. Even if I haven’t been publicly working on this thematic selection for a very long time, my ears are always chasing lalalas when I hear new tracks.
Here, you’ll get Nippon human beatboxing, a bossa nova interpretation of croaking (which undisputedly falls into the lala category), funky shouts, Spanish pop objections, groovy vocal overdubs, more Japanese whispered chewing, chorusing damsels à la Atom Heart, jazzy French polyphony, a restless disco lullaby (I’m not sure it would « rock » anyone to sleep, though), a jolly schoolyard ensemble, the most hilarious chipmunk lala ever in English pop history, more Iberian shalalalala-ohohs, a house anthem that will make you dance and sing, gypsy heartthrobs, a romantisch ballad which has incredibly grown in me (probably because I don’t get a word in German), one of Randy Newman’s first hits sung in Doo-wop style, and finally soulful murmurs from Philly…
Very easy listening indeed, even easier singing.

Never thought I’d keep blogging for such a long time, even if it has become something that I only do from time to time.
So when I started selecting tracks for a lovely young lady turning 8 (almost Playpause’s age), I thought I’d celebrate both events with a special compilation, made of covers, mashups, samples and interpolations. Because I’ve been playing the « par-3 covers blind test » with her father from when she wasn’t born.
And because on traditional Playpause seasonal « selects », there are always a couple of them.

#covers bring out the best of a song and of a performer, #mashups demonstrate how timeless pop music can be, #heavysamples prove that good sonic ideas are good and #interpolations are a fun game to play.

I could have selected dozens of other songs, of course. But these ones have been with me for a few months or a few days. They just sound 2011 to me.

elzasoares

Elza Soares is my favourite singer among all favourites. Her voice touches me in a point where no other singer touches me (well, except for Joe Dukie, but it’s another story) and I have once told her divalicious legend. The purpose of this post is celebrate her scat, her groove, her warm raucousness, her soulful interpretations and most of all her overwhelming love of music and life. « Vivo Feliz » is the name of her latest solo studio LP (2004) and I guess it says it all, no matter what she went through (poverty, rape, violence, racism, death… ).
Free, strong and outspoken woman, notwithstanding her iconic status, she was involved in left-wing political activism in the 70s and has supported gay rights from the 80s. « We are all equal« , she sang in 1985. Unfortunately, it’s one of Elza’s weakest albums (undisputedly the worst cover artwork) and, despite the title of this post, none of the songs from this LP is featured on the personal seleção I’ve cooked up. 27 tracks earpicked in her whole discography: from 1959 to the Oughties, she has recorded hundreds of sambas, bossa novas and other brazilian gems that dig into jazz and urban contemporary influences.
Her fame and story have inspired a musical, Crioula, and an upcoming documentary biopic: « Elza Soares, a voz do Brasil« .
Let’s hope that Brazil will speak with the same hopeful and lively voice when its people goes to the voting booths on Sunday..
